Freelancers Union announces UBT tax cut for freelancers worth up to $3,400
Six months ago, Freelancers Union launched an aggressive grassroots campaign to repeal New York City's Unincorporated Business Tax (UBT). Together, we sent emails, attended rallies, made phone calls, and signed petitions urging lawmakers to end the unfair double tax on independent workers. They heard our calls-and they responded-eliminating the UBT for those earning less than $100,000 and enacting a tax credit for freelancers earning up to $150,000. But our work isn't done. Individually, we're still overtaxed, uninsured, and unrepresented in the halls of government. Our victory proves that when freelancers come together, we're a powerful force for change. At its core, our movement was always about much more than tax cuts. It's about the future of independent work.

DMI Bulletin's publishes Rita Armstrong's Viewpoints on the Difficulties of Finding Senior Brand Talent
The DMI's June 2006 eBulletin includes an article from Rita Armstrong addressing why so many of her clients are having trouble hiring senior branding designers. Rita explains that "The shortage of talent at this level is the result of several market trends," including the failure to hire during the slow economy that took hold 5 years ago and the lack of promotions or staffing up during the recovery. Rita answers the questions: What can a company do to draw in the type of talent it needs, and how do I hold on to my staff without going broke? What do Brand Managers and Design Directors want? And she provides some advice for how to avoid these pitfalls.
